Endocrine Group
Convenor: Nic Bury, King’s College London
Deputy Convenor: Armin Strum, University of Stirling

This group is interested in all aspects of research in comparative animal endocrinology and has strong links with a number of the groups within the Animal Section. The interests include both vertebrate and invertebrate endocrinology and because the endocrine system controls so many physiological functions the subjects we cover affect many physiological processes. For example: encompassing the role of hormones in reproduction, ion regulation, digestion, molting , and development. The group reflects current advances in comparative endocrinology such as reporting on the growing body of evidence that links man-made chemicals with endocrine disruption and the molecular evolution of the steroid receptor superfamily .
An example of the group’s interest would be hormone control of sperm development, and the figure below shows the bizarre “blue and white” testis of the spotted ratfish ( Hyrolagus colliei ) . (If anyone has an explanation for the blue half please contact the convenor).
