Below are descriptions of the Cell Biology Sessions that ran at the meeting. For the full meeting programme click here

Protein Folding and General Molecular Cell Biology

Dates: 1st July
Organised by: Adam Benham (Durham), Susan Brooks (Oxford Brookes) and Mathis Riehle (Glasgow)
Contact: adam.benham@durham.ac.uk

Speakers Include:

Dr Marissa Powers (Institute of Cancer Research), Prof Neil Bulleid (University of Manchester), Prof Nigel Robinson (University of Newcastle), Dr Simon Powis (University of St Andrews), Dr Cheryl Woolhead (University of Glasgow), Dr David Brockwell (University of Leeds)

Description:

This session will cover topical aspects of protein folding in vivo and in vitro, including protein folding across the kingdoms and in health and disease.

This session also comprises talks and posters on all diverse aspects of cell biology that are not specifically catered for in the other Cell Section sessions.

RMS Learning Zone

Dates: 28th June - 1st July (in exhibition area)
Organised by: Susan Brooks (Oxford Brookes)
Contact: sbrooks@brookes.ac.uk

The RMS Learning Zone

The Learning Zone is an outreach activity of the Royal Microscopical Society.

Updating and improving your skills are essential components of career development. But, with looming deadlines, proposals to write, and papers to submit, they can be all too easy to overlook. The RMS Learning Zone helps to address this problem. It offers scientists and technicians the opportunity to learn new techniques from microscopy experts and the chance to discuss difficulties they may be having with specimen preparation or imaging.

  • As part of the Royal Microscopical Society's remit to teach and improve microscopy, the RMS Learning Zone isFREE to all SEB registrants.
  • The RMS Learning Zone will be a major feature of the Exhibition and will give visitors the chance to practise and trouble-shoot light and fluorescence microscopy techniques, with experts available on-hand to answer questions and give practical advice and one-to-one tuition.
  • No questions or problems are too small or large to ask.  Do you need a refresher course in how to set up a light microscope?  Do you understand phase contrast, or the optics of attaching a digital camera to a microscope?  Would you like to learn more about immunohistochemistry?  Come along and talk to one of the RMS members at the Learning Zone.
  • The Learning Zone will be open all day throughout the SEB conference, from 10 am each day.  We will be running short seminars at 12.30 pm during the lunch hour on the following topics:

1)  Understanding the light microscope (Sunday and Tuesday)

2)  An introduction to Immunohistochemistry (Monday and Wednesday)

Whatever your interest in microscopy may be, come along and talk to us.

General Thermal Biology

Dates: 1st July
Organised by: Hans-Otto Poertner and Piero Calosi
Contact: hans.poertner@awi.de and piero.calosi@plymouth.ac.uk

Description:
As the name indicates, this session comprises talks and posters on all aspects of Thermal Biology from Animal, Plant and Cell Sections.  Hot topics include the role of temperature in climate change effects on ecosystems and its interaction with other stressors. As such, the session is an important element of the scientific programme, with high-quality presentations on a wide spectrum of subjects.  The General session has been successful in recent years, by grouping the submitted contributions into overarching themes. Session length at Glasgow in 2009 will depend upon the number of submissions.  We particularly encourage presentations by post-grads and post-docs.

Leaf Form and Function (joint plant/cell session)

Dates: 29th June - 30th June
Organised by: Andy Fleming and Jim Murray
Contact: Andy Fleming (a.fleming@sheffield.ac.uk) and Jim Murray (j.murray@biotech.cam.ac.uk)

Speakers Include:
Jim Barber (Imperial), Gerrit Beemster (Ghent), Rishi Bhalerao (Umea), Dominique Bergmann (Stanford), Andrew Fleming (Sheffield), Christine Granier (Montpellier), Julian Hibberd (Cambridge), Patrick Laufs (Versailles), Jim Murray (Cardiff), Uli Schurr (Jülich), Neelimha Sinha (UC Davis), Miltos Tsiantis (Oxford).

Description:
Significant progress has been made in our understanding of distinct elements of leaf biology.  Are we now at a stage where we can start to put those elements together to gain an integrated understanding of how a leaf is made and how it functions?

Session themes include leaf form, growth, differentiation and function.
