SEB Glasgow 2009 - Education and Public Affairs Programme

The Education & Public Affairs Section of the SEB is once again running an additional programme during the SEB Meeting in order to add value to the conference experience of our members and delegates. We also aim to create an impact on the local community by providing public events whilst we are visiting the region. Delegates are very welcome to get involved or attend these events, to make a contribution or simply to find out more about science outreach and public engagement.

Saturday 27 June  (17.00 – 21.00)

PRE-CONFERENCE EVENT

Crowne Plaza Hotel, adjacent to the conference centre

Organised by Sarah Blackford and Pat Heslop Harrison

Conferences are all about communication – presenting talks and posters but also talking to and networking with other delegates. Productive conversations can involve useful discussions about your research, lead to collaborations or even job offers. Aimed at PhD students and post-docs, this workshop is for those who would like to get the most out of the SEB conference and other future meetings. You will get a chance to meet up with some of our honorary SEB officers, find out how the SEB and other learned societies work as well as getting involved in some interactive communication exercises aimed at increasing your conference experience.

The event is timed so that you can arrive in time for registration and then attend the workshop which includes a buffet dinner and bar.

Price for this event: £10 to cover the cost of dinner

RADIO INTERVIEW WORKSHOP

Organised by Jenny Sneddon (Liverpool John Moores University)

BBC Scotland (opposite the conference centre)

This workshop, which is primarily aimed at those with very little or no experience of being interviewed, is limited to 18 participants. Following a 20 minute introduction from the BBC Scotland professional staff, participants will be interviewed on a one-to-one basis personally and by observing others. Feedback on performance will also be offered and everyone will be able to take home a CD of the workshop.

Commitment to this workshop is essential for it to be a success so we ask for applicants to prepare a 150 word summary on their work to be submitted a week beforehand and ask them to arrive at 12.00 prompt for the introduction.

If you would like to register your interest for this event please contact Sarah Blackford s.blackford@lancaster.ac.uk

EVOLUTION OF EVOLUTION – Outreach Event

Glasgow Science Centre

Organised by Sarah Blackford, Tijana Blanusa, Jenny Sneddon and Jeremy Pritchard

In 2009 we are celebrating the Year of Darwin, and this public event is designed to complement the SEB main conference interdisciplinary session, ‘The Evolution of Evolution’. SEB delegates are encouraged to come and visit the Glasgow Science Centre (adjacent to the Conference Centre) and interact with the public on issues of Evolution and science in general. We already have some exciting and interesting interactive exhibits and shows organised but if you would like to offer an outreach display or resource please contact Sarah Blackford ( s.blackford@lancaster.ac.uk) and we would be happy to include you.

The event will comprise:

1. Exhibition of interactive and hands-on activities (Including: The Evolution of Art and Words; Glasgow and Edinburgh Botanic Gardens, American Society of Plant Biology, British Ecological Society, Bat Conservation Trust, Royal Horticultural Society).
2. Science Show ‘Am I an Ape?’ A public lecture considering human evolution to a public audience 3 times each day.
3. Public Debate (with speakers from the SEB conference and outside)

Please note that the Education & Public Affairs Section is also co-organising the interdisciplinary scientific session 'The Evolution of Evolution - What would you tell Darwin?' running on 28th and 29th June as part of the SEB Annual Main Meeting. Please click here for details.
