The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) (sponsor) is the UKs leading sponsor of non-medical biological research. Its remit covers basic animal, plant and microbiology ranging from research on the fine molecular detail underlying biological mechanisms to research involving nutrient cycling in agricultural systems. BBSRC spends approximately £380M pa in support of its Mission, covering support for research grants, institute programmes, studentships, fellowships, interactions with industry, international progammes and public interactions. BBSRC established its strategic plan priorities in 2003 which featured a focus on UK biological science becoming more quantitative, requiring improved analytical techniques and the introduction of modelling approaches alongside experimental work to help solve biological problems. Implementation began in 2004/5 with BBSRC investing nearly £50M by establishing six major centres for Integrative Systems Biology (at the following institutions: Imperial, Newcastle, Manchester, Nottingham, Edinburgh, Oxford). A further £35M has recently been committed to a range of collaborative research projects in systems biology, making the UK one of the leading international sponsors in this emerging area of research. www.bbsrc.ac.uk
