Salzburg the City
Salzburg may only be the fourth largest city in Austria but it is certainly one of the most characteristic. The Old Town, a wonderful mix of history, architechture and culture was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg is often better known for its part in the American musical The Sound of Music, the true story of Maria von Trapp, a Salzburg-based nun who took up with an aristocratic family and fled the German Anschluss. Admittedly, it is difficult not to burst into song whilst walking along the Salzach River, or climbing up to the Hohensalzburg fortress which looms over the city, but there is a lot more to the city than what you saw in the movie!
Salzburg is a many faceted city, full of history, charm and culture. And, when you've seen and done the 'touristy' things, Salzburg’s lesser-known corners offer blissful respite. The contemporary contours of the Museum der Moderne, high on the cliffs of the Salzach or the chilled bars lining the right bank are the perfect remedy for an overkill of the obvious. Sitting on the banks of the fast-flowing Salzach as the sun sinks over the city, it becomes clear that Salzburg still rocks. Even without Amadeus.
So, whilst we know you'll be there for the Science, make sure you take some time after the meeting to explore this wonderful city!
