Travelling to Abbazia di Spineto
Abbazia di Spineto is located in the heart of Tuscany, on the South border of Siena district, just south of Sarteano, and almost exactly half way between Florence and Rome.
Train and Plane
Try to arrange your travel so that you arrive in either Florence or Rome, as these two cities have the best connections to the venue, as well as good connections with international hubs such as London, Amsterdam, Berlin etc.
If you are flying into Florence, you will need to make your way to the Firenze S.M.N train station before following the directions below.
If you are flying into Rome, you will need to make your way to the Roma Termini train station before following the directions below.
The closest train station to the venue is Chiusi-Chianciano Terme railway station, which, depending on the train you catch, is between 1.5 and 2hrs from either Florence or Rome. Tickets cost between €14 and €22 for a return journey and can be purchased online in advance using the Trenitalia website, or in person upon arrival at the train station. Trains leave both stations (Florence and Rome) around once an hour.
Once you get to Chiusi-Chianciano, we will provide a shuttle bus to transport you to the venue – this will take approximately 40 minutes by coach (trust us, it will be worth it when you get there!). Shuttle bus times will be confirmed closer to the event, but we would ask that you let us know your anticipated arrival time at Chiusi-Chianciano when you have booked your travel, to ensure we provide enough shuttles at the right times!
Road
Take the A1 Firenze-Roma motorway; exiting at Chiusi-Chianciano junction. 100 meters after the exit turn left following the signposts to Sarteano-Radicofani. You will reach a roundabout after about 6.5km, go straight across following directions to the “Centre”for about 200m. At the entrance of the square at Sarteano, turn left immediately, taking the road towards Amiata Radicofani. After about 5km you will see a sign “12 SP 478”: turn right - two lines of cypress trees will lead you directly to the Spineto Abbey. The parking for visitors is at the end of the cypress path down on the right. Once you’ve parked, walk up 100 meters until you reach the big blue gate of the Abbey.
Travelling from Abbazia di Spineto
A coach transfer from the venue to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme railway station will be provided on the morning of the 27th of June. Delegates not attending SEB Salzburg will need to make their own way from Chiusi to Florence/Rome depending on their return travel plans.
For delegates attending SEB Salzburg there are a number of travel options available.
Option 1: Hire a car
Take a road trip through the heart of the rolling Italian countryside, across the border and into Austria. Car hire is available in Chiusi, we would advise booking a car in advance. Team up with fellow Woodstock attendees to cut the cost - use our Facebook Page to chat to other attendees and make arrangements. Here is some useful information on driving in Italy and Salzburg. If you have an EU driving licence (with photograph) you don't need to get an international drivers licence, however if you have an old one without a photograph this is not valid unless accompanied by a valid passport. If you do not hold an EU drivers licence it is advisable to carry an International Driving Permit along with your drivers licence. You should also be aware that there will be tolls en route.
Option 2: Take the train
Various train routes are available from Florence and Rome, but Florence is one step closer to Salzburg than Rome so you may as well travel from Florence. You can either take a day trip to catch the views of the countryside, or you can take a sleeper train. There are no direct trains - you will have to stop in one or two places to change and journeys take between 8 and 12 hours depending on the route you choose. The best journey we've been able to find is Florence - Munich - Salzburg: although the journey time is 12 hours you only have one change and as it is a sleeper train you can spend the day in Florence first! Tickets from Florence to Munich are €94 (from Trenitalia when booked in advance) and Munich to Salzburg range between €20 - €40 (from Deutsche Bahn when booked in advance).
Alternatively, the Budget Europe Travel Service can provide comprehensive travel information and issue tickets for travel however there may be a small issuing fee for tickets.
Option 3: Fly
There aren't any direct flights from either Rome or Florence to Salzburg: you have to stop over in one of the main hubs in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. The best flights we have found are from Rome to Salzburg with Air Berlin, stopping over in either Dusseldorf or Berlin. Ticket prices start at €115 when booked in advance.
