Stefan focuses on understanding how the hormone auxin can regulate so many different patterning and growth processes in plant development. His group uses a combination of experimentation and mathematical modelling to understand how the auxin response network – itself a complex system – contributes to auxin’s versatility as a developmental regulator. In particular, Stefan’s group uses these approaches to establish the biophysical and molecular basis of root and shoot branch growth angle control and to probe the role of auxin in patterning the root epidermis. The results of this work, carried out principally in Arabidopsis, are now being applied to the improvement of root and shoot function in oilseed rape, wheat, rice and maize.
