Plant Development

The Plant Development Interest Group covers all areas of plant development from germination through to senescence. It includes development studied at the molecular, cellular, tissue and whole plant levels as well as organelle development. Since plant development encompasses almost all aspects of plant biology and is strongly influenced by the environment, this Interest Group fulfils a central role in plant biology research.

The Convenor of the Plant Development Group is Matthew Terry (University of Southampton). MatthewTerry.

Matthew is currently a Reader in Molecular Plant Biology in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton. After completing a degree in Biochemistry from Southampton he studied for a Ph.D. in Biology also at Southampton researching light regulation of membrane transport. Following postdoctoral research positions studying the synthesis of the phytochrome chromophore with Clark Lagarias at UC Davis in California and Dick Kendrick as a Frontier Researcher at RIKEN in Japan, he returned to Southampton as a Royal Society University Research Fellow to work on light regulation of chloroplast development. His current research is primarily focused on the light signalling pathways that regulate early seedling development in Arabidopsis and the mechanisms by which developing chloroplasts communicate with the nucleus about their developmental status.
