11/12th September 2006

p8_1.

The Plastid Preview is an informal meeting held annually to provide a forum for young researchers working on any area of plastid biology to get together with other young scientist and also to have the opportunity to give an oral presentation on their work. This year the meeting was held at Essex University and over 50 participants attended for the two days. The meeting was divided into five sessions with a total of over 20 oral presentations covering a wide range of topics all selected from submitted abstracts.

The quality of the talks was extremely high and awards were given for outstanding presentations to four speakers: Mark Waters, Oxford Universtiy, who talked about the role of the GLK genes in chloroplast development; Martin Gisby from Manchester on expression of foreign proteins in the chloroplast; Sylviane Comparot , JIC, told us about the regulatory role of Sex4 in Starch degradation and Douglas Maffei, Royal Holloway, on his success on the cloning of the Cue8 mutant gene.

A highlight of this meeting is the conference dinner and a good evening was had by all as scientific discussions continued into the small hours. I would like to say a special thanks to our sponsors, Gatsby Charitable Foundation, Journal of Experimental Botany, ADC Biosciences and the SEB for their support. Overall it was a very successful meeting and we look forward to The Plastid Preview 2007 to be hosted by Dr Mark Waters at Oxford University, Plant Sciences.
