In too deep?

Rising temperatures, brought on by global warming, represent possibly the most daunting challenge for marine organisms, particularly those adapted to conditions in the Polar Regions. But ocean communities face many other challenges on top of this which could test their resilience to breaking point – including acidification, pollution and overfishing. In this article we hear from selected scientists, who presented their latest research at the SEB Meeting, Prague 2015.

Formerly the chair of SEB’s Education Committee and a member of the Plant Section, Christine still engages actively with the SEB, regularly organising sessions during the annual main meeting and acting as handling editor on the SEB’s Journal of Experimental Botany (JXB). A prominent academic figure in the field of plant regulation and growth, Christine is professor of plant sciences and directs Africa College at the University of Leeds.

Doing science in the laboratory has its own rewards, but doing science that helps change the world, that inspires people and changes the way they think is even better. That was the central message of the SEB+ Science with Impact session at Prague 2015, where four speakers told us why their research really mattered. This included tackling big issues, pushing to change global policy and inspiring people to use their science to make a difference. As the session chair, Alun Anderson, put it, “this is where we go beyond the science to its impact”.

Follow the Leader?

Many, like me, assumed some of the ‘mature’ men to be leaders when, in fact, they were students. But then, as Susan pointed out, didn’t they qualify as leaders, since they had come up with the ideas which had led to their team winning the competition? Weren’t some of the women students pictured also leaders – they had led the communication of the project. Susan’s point was clear – we all make assumptions about leaders and leadership.
