I meet John in London where he is hosting the SEB Synthetic Biology Symposium. One of his postdocs introduces me, excited to present her fascinating professor. As the Chair of the SEB Cell Section, John aims to involve younger scientists in designing symposia and focus on their research interests.

Organised by a consortium (called NUCLEUS) of around 15 Bioscience funding bodies and academic societies, including SEB, we identify researchers who are willing to deliver a 30 minute talk on particular aspects of their research that will be of interest to teachers.

Many of the talks at the SEB Synthetic Biology conference began with the classic definition of synthetic biology: ‘The design or redesign of biological systems, circuits or parts.’ Throughout the conference however it was increasingly clear that this definition does not reflect the exciting reality of synthetic biology research and its applications.

These catchy headlines certainly did a good job of attracting a full-house of over 100 delegates and speakers to Charles Darwin House, where our annual ‘Trisoc’ meeting was held in January this year. Organised jointly by SEB and our sister societies, Biochemical Society and the British Ecological Society, this year’s meeting, entitled “Impact of Pesticides on Bee Health”, featured presentations by speakers from academia, industry, research institutes and governmental policy departments.
