Awards and prizes

The SEB will be running two competitions at this year's SEB Conference to recognise the research of early career scientists and students, and their outstanding contribution to the field of experimental biology. 

The YSAS award and Irene Manton poster prize are open to everyone (not just SEB members) and more information can be found below:

Young Scientist Award Session (YSAS)

Application for the YSAS award is now open. 
Application deadline: Midnight (BST) on Tuesday 6 April 2021

The Young Scientist Award Session (YSAS) is held each year at the SEB Conference. The YSAS Award provides the opportunity for postgraduates and postdocs, who are within 5 years since completing their PhD, to showcase their talents and is designed to recognise the best young researchers.

There are three prizes per section (i.e. Animal-Cell and Plant-Cell) and the prizes on offer are:

  • 1st Prize: £400
  • Runners up: 2 x £100

How to enter

  1. Submit an abstract online for a relevant session at the SEB Conference on or before 6 April 2021 and tick the box which states "I would like to be considered for YSAS".
  2. Submit an extended version of the abstract for judging by a panel together with two letters of references (one of which should confirm your status). For more information on preparing the extended abstract, please see frequently asked questions.
  3. Your extended abstract needs to be submitted by 19 April 2021 and should be emailed as a Word document to Eniola Alalade, The extended abstract must follow the structure and layout in the abstract template.

    The extended abstract should be no more than one A4 page and formatting instructions can be found on the template. Your two letters of reference should be emailed to Oliver as well, although these need to be sent by the referees themselves.

What happens next?

  1. The extended abstracts will be judged and the three best candidates per section will be invited to give a presentation to a panel of judges at the Annual Conference.
  2. The presentations, based on the extended abstract, will be given at the Annual Conference on 19 June 2021 and a winner and two runners up from each section will be chosen on the basis of those presentations.
  3. The winners of the award will be announced during the Medal and Prize session on 2 July 2021.

Irene Manton Poster Prize

Application deadline: Midnight (BST) on Monday 19 April 2021

The Irene Manton Poster Prize is open to students and early career scientists. A prize of £100 is awarded to the best poster in each section (animal, cell, plant and SEB+).

How to enter Submit an abstract online for a relevant session at the Annual Conference on or before 19 April 2021 and tick the box which states "I would like to be considered for Irene Manton poster prize".

A PDF version of your final poster must be submitted to Eniola Alalade,, by 26 April 2021. Posters will be judged during the virtual poster sessions, you will be able to upload your final PDF poster at your virtual poster session.
