Overview of the project:

The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences is looking to fill the vacancy of the Micro and Molecular Biology laboratory technician. The successful candidate will join our small friendly team of highly skilled dedicated technicians and will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the teaching Cat II laboratory, as well as becoming involved with other teaching and research laboratories. He/she will also prepare and assist with the Microbiology and Molecular biology practicals for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Responsabilities

  • To provide technical expertise in Microbiology and Molecular Biology in the Faculty.
  • To prepare, set out and clear away designated practical classes, including growing cells when required.
  • To undertake demonstrations and provide technical support for practical classes in laboratories and to instruct and supervise project students and research groups.
  • To monitor and order stocks of specialised materials as necessary for teaching and research, including lab consumables and equipment.
  • To work with lab users and other members of the technical team to organise workloads, to ensure timely and sufficient availability of equipment and space.
  • To train and help supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student projects, particular in areas of Microbiology and Molecular biology.
  • To assist academic staff in the development and testing of new and revised practical classes for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • To assist with the organisation/ set up for visit days, open days and other outreach activities for the area, and to attend these activities when required.

We are looking for a well-qualified enthusiastic scientist who is familiar with a wide range of laboratory techniques, and who is interested in applying his/her scientific knowledge and technical expertise in a high education teaching laboratory environment. We are also looking for someone who will become a part of our small but efficient technical team, and who will be happy sharing team responsibilities, as well as bringing his/her unique knowledge and experience.



Requirements

  • HNC/HND or appropriate BSc/MSc in a relevant discipline (Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry, or similar).
  • Substantial demonstrable scientific experience in the discipline of Molecular biology or Microbiology, ideally in a hospital laboratory or high education laboratory settings.
  • Experience in lab health and safety documentation and procedures, and ability to demonstrate an understanding of health and safety in a lab.
  • Good communication and practical skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work as part of a team, but also able and willing to work on own initiative and learn new skills.
