Overview of the Plant Direct Journal:
Plant Direct is an open access, sound science journal for the plant sciences and gives prompt and equal consideration to papers reporting work on a wide variety of subjects. It is a collaborative journal launched by the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB), the Society for Experimental Biology (SEB) and Wiley, and it supports the ASPB, SEB and the wider plant science communities.

Overview of the position:

The current Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Ivan Baxter, is stepping down at the end of December 2021. Launched in 2017, Plant Direct has gone from strength to strength under Ivan’s leadership, and ASPB, SEB, and Wiley seek to appoint a successor with the vision and drive to build on these strengths.

The Editor-in-Chief will be supported by a strong Editorial Team of Supervising Editors, Academic Editors and an Editorial Office team, as well as representatives from ASPB, SEB and Wiley. Plant Direct publishes papers submitted directly to the journal, as well as papers referred from a select group of the societies’ journals (the supporter journals).

This is a very exciting opportunity, and applications are invited from individuals working in any area of plant science.

The successful candidate will have:
• The passion, commitment, and strategic vision to build on the successes of Plant Direct and for the journal to further extend its position as ‘the leading open research, sound science journal for the global plant biology community’;
• A proactive and forward thinking approach to developing the journal in line with agreed objectives, including increasing the number of published articles;
• An international reputation and an established network of contacts working within plant science;
• Previous editorial experience on well-respected journals in the subject area as an editorial board member, guest editor or associate editor;
• An awareness of where the subject and publishing sector will be in five years’ time and of emerging trends in the subject area;
• Strong academic credentials and a track record of publishing in key plant science journals;
• Leadership qualities and an ability to motivate authors, reviewers, and the Editorial Team.

Requirements:
• In collaboration with ASPB, SEB, Wiley and the Editorial Team, to develop, implement and maintain a strategic plan for the journal;
• To set editorial policy and standards for the journal, and maintain these;
• Oversee the peer review process for contributions in collaboration with the Editorial Team and Editorial Office;
• To oversee decisions of accept and reject for contributions submitted to the journal;
• Work collaboratively with the Editorial Team and Editorial Office to monitor key performance measures;
• Work collaboratively with the Editor-in-Chiefs of the supporter journals to encourage papers to be referred onto Plant Direct;
• Communicate with the Editorial Team on a regular basis and recruit the Editorial Team to ensure it is international, diverse, and broad in scope;
• Assist ASPB, SEB and Wiley in promoting the journal wherever possible through contacts and at conferences, and encourage authors to submit to Plant Direct.

Application Process

All candidates should submit their CV together with a covering letter outlining their suitability for the role and a vision statement for Plant Direct.

The position is for an initial period of three years commencing on 1st January 2022 (although the handover from the current Editor-in-Chief will begin in October 2021). The initial term may be extended by mutual agreement. The Editor-in-Chief will be appointed by and report to representatives from ASPB, SEB and Wiley, and the role carries an annual honorarium.
