Plant Direct
Introducing Plant Direct
17 March 2017

As the editor-in-chief, I am excited to introduce Plant Direct (plantdirectjournal.org), a new journal from Wiley and the societies behind Plant Physiology, The Plant Journal, and The Plant Cell. Although there is a crowded landscape of journals to choose from, we believe that Plant Direct fills an unserved role for the plant community. We seek to be the sound science plant journal for the community of ASPB members, Society for Experimental Biology (SEB) members, and the authors who publish in our society journals.

Sound the alarm! Roots and systemic plant defence
05 December 2016

When we’re threatened we tend to alert everyone around us, and it’s the same at the cellular level. The recent Journal of Experimental Botany paper from Agut et al. takes the specific case of two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) attack on citrus, and in so doing brings new insights to the idea of a ‘shoot–root–shoot’ (SRS) loop in defending a multitude of plants against a similarly large variety of pests and pathogens. See also the separate Insight article from Simon Groen for an independent perspective on this vitally important area of research.
