Andrew Leakey

Photosynthesis and Metabolism Group Convenor

The Leakey research group at the University of Illinois studies crop-environment interactions, primarily in field experiments. We have a long-term interest in understanding crop responses to global environmental change, especially rising CO2 concentrations and drought.

The major focus of our group at present is to understand the genetic and physiological controls of stomatal patterning, photosynthetic water use efficiency (WUE) and rooting through a combination of molecular genetics, quantitative genetics, and physiology. This will hopefully advance efforts to improve crop WUE and drought tolerance.

Dr Leakey received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Plant Sciences from the University of Sheffield, UK. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. He has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and the Calvin-Benson Prize for excellence in early-career research on photosynthesis.
