Outreach Education and Diversity (OED) webinar series 6

OED Webinar Series

The Outreach, Education and Diversity (OED) Webinar Series is a series of events that will run every 2 months. They will be free to attend and are designed to support our community of educators, from research and teaching focused staff, looking to improve their teaching, develop skills, and build a network of like-minded collegaues.

Running across the year, each 45-minute session will focus on themes within Outreach, Educaiton, and Diversity (OED) remit. There will be a couple of short talks (usually 15 minutes) and group discussions. Occationally the sessions will take the format of a workshop to share ideas, experiences, and practical approaches.

Sessions will be recorded (where speakers agree) and made available on the SEB website and YouTube, ensuring ongoing access for the wider community.

If you would like to suggest a topic or volunteer to speak, please contact Amanda Rasmussen ([email protected]).

For this session, in our OED series we will feature two speakers on the topic of decolonising bioscience curriculum:

Dr Dave Lawson -   Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol. His research spans behavioural ecology, with particular focus on plant–pollinator interactions and animal behaviour. Alongside his scientific work, Dave is also interested in pedagogical research, currently working on projects related embedding Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in teaching. As Academic Director (Inclusion, Belonging and Community) for Health and Life Sciences Faculty, he has played a central role in several decolonisation initiatives: supervising student-led audits of curriculum content, developing workshops (such as Decolonising Biological Sciences Research), and co-developing resources like Contextualising the Biosciences.

Dr Lara Mosunmola Lalemi -  holds the position of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Officer at University of Bristol, as well as founder and CEO of Creative Tuition Collective, an organisation that supports young people in their education journey, with a focus on the specific needs of underrepresented communities and intersectional experiences.

Her academic background includes a PhD in aerosol chemistry at Bristol, where her research has considered environmental and atmospheric science questions. In her EDI work she has been instrumental in designing decolonisation workshops for first-year bioscience students, leading training and change-making efforts for curriculum inclusion, and advocating for broader representation and justice within STEM teaching.
