Early Career working group
Our Early Career Working Group is run by members, for members, to give early career researchers a strong voice and ensure you are represented across the Society.
How can I join?
We welcome any Student or Early Career SEB members who would like to get more involved with the SEB or connect with peers at a similar career stage.
We define Early Career as graduated with a PhD and no more than 5 years have passed since your graduation. Career breaks are taken into account.
You will be invited to take part in four one-hour online discussions per year, where you can share your thoughts on our existing Early Career activities and suggest ways to improve SEB’s support in this area. Members who would like to be more actively involved will also have the opportunity to co-organise or host activities and co-create resources.

Meet your Early Career Trustee
Group Chair: Robyn Emmerson, University of Oxford
"I joined the SEB early on in the first year my PhD after my supervisor suggested it. Fast forward 2 and a bit years (and the height of the pandemic), I gave my first ever presentation at the annual conference in 2022. After starting my first postdoc, a membership email came asking for an early career trustee to join the council. At the time, I wasn't really sure what this would mean but since July 2023 I've been representing ECR interests to help make sure the society is providing what we need. As part of this, I suggested we set up an early career panel to get as many voices heard as possible- all our journeys are so different and I want to make sure the SEB is doing its best for us all. If this is something that interests you, please fill in this form and we'll be in touch!"
Roles in the Early Career Working Group Team
We’re looking for enthusiastic members to take on active roles within the Early Career Working Group. These positions will support the Chair in running the group and give you the chance to take on greater responsibility.
Getting involved is a great way to develop leadership and organisational skills, make new connections, and strengthen your CV. It’s an opportunity to help shape the Early Career community within SEB while gaining valuable experience for your own career progression.
