The “leaky pipeline” is a well-known analogy used to describe the progressive attrition of women in STEM at key points during their STEM journey. This has led to concepts such as "science capital"  (a measure of an individual’s attitude, knowledge and connections with STEM) gaining prominence as an indicator of likely persistence.

The cross-institutional research team seeks to give a voice to current female-presenting STEM students and staff. And through exploration of science capital seeks to understand key drivers for persistence in an environment where their voices are not always heard. Dr Sarah Rayment and Dr Bunmi Omototionmwan will discuss the findings from the project so far, as well as how a project design co-created with undergraduate students as research partners has continued to develop.

Dr Sarah Rayment (SFHEA) is an Associate Professor in Bioscience education and skill development at Nottingham Trent University. As the Bioscience Scholarship Centre's Director she supports development of scholarship across the department; whilst her personal scholarship interests focus on authentic learning experiences and skill development.

Dr Bunmi Omorotionmwan (SFHEA) is a Senior Lecturer in Microbiology and Theme Lead, Innovative Pedagogy, within the Bioscience Scholarship Research Centre at Nottingham Trent University. Her scholarship research interests explore how new teaching innovations and inclusive assessments can be used to improve student outcomes and narrow awarding gaps.

OED Webinar Series

The Outreach, Education and Diversity (OED) Webinar Series is a series of events that runs every 2 months. They are free to attend and are designed to support our community of educators, from research and teaching-focused staff, looking to improve their teaching, develop skills, and build a network of like-minded colleagues.

Running across the year, each 45-minute session will focus on themes within Outreach, Education, and Diversity (OED) remit. There will be a couple of short talks (usually 15 minutes) and group discussions. Occasionally the sessions will take the format of a workshop to share ideas, experiences, and practical approaches.

Sessions will be recorded (where speakers agree) and made available on the SEB website and YouTube, ensuring ongoing access for the wider community.

If you would like to suggest a topic or volunteer to speak, please fill out our OED webinar proposal form, or contact Amanda Rasmussen ([email protected]).

If you are keen to get more involved with the SEB and help shape our work in outreach, education and diversity, join our OED Working Group. This is a friendly community of SEB members who share ideas, promote discussion, and help us strengthen our activities in these areas. More information and form to sign up here!
