The Society for Experimental Biology

About the Society
The Society for Experimental Biology (SEB) is an international membership organisation for those studying, practicing or with an interest in all areas of Experimental Biology. It aims to promote, demonstrate the impact and increase the influence of Experimental Biology and to foster cross disciplinary connections within the scientific community. The Society encompasses three scientific sections covering Animal, Plant and Cell biology and has a programme of outreach, education, career building and diversity activities. The Society holds an annual conference and other events serving the needs of the above subjects and publishes 5 scientific journals.
About the Position
We are seeking an Impact and Media Lead to help strengthen the Society’s outreach and impact activities, working closely with the OED Manager to deliver our 2025–2030 strategy. This role will lead on impact and media engagement, spanning both our OED activities and the translation of experimental biology into real-world solutions, while contributing to the wider work within the Society’s outreach, education and diversity (OED) portfolio.
The postholder will take the lead on the following areas:
- Highlighting experimental impact and demonstrating the value of SEB and its science – designing, delivering, and evaluating initiatives to showcase the societal impact of experimental biology and our members’ research.
- Enhancing engagement between researchers and end-user groups (e.g. agriculture, conservation, industry) through targeted activities such as impact workshops, public lectures, conference sessions open to industry, and media engagement.
- Building member capability in impact communication, developing resources and training to help researchers demonstrate the significance of their work.
- Work with the OED Manager to identify and implement ways of showcasing the impact of OED initiatives, and to promote more widely the positive progress achieved in this area.
- Developing and managing a media expert database - working with SEB partners, identify priority topics within experimental biology that are likely to generate media interest, and identify and maintain a list of SEB members able to respond to media enquiries.
- Helping to secure sponsorship for OED events at the conference and for career development workshops throughout the year.
- Supporting the OED working group, award nomination task force, and other member-led groups to foster community engagement and member ownership of initiatives.
Suitable candidates will have experience demonstrating impact or media engagement in a science setting, ideally related to experimental biology (either formal/paid or in a volunteer capacity) as well as the ability to build sound and diplomatic working relationships with others, and in particular the ability to liaise with a wide variety of stakeholders.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
