This Session

Dr Sarah Rayment will explore how students perceive and interact with technology in laboratory settings, and how educators can help mitigate lab-related anxiety. Laboratory classes play a key role in bioscience education, allowing students to build meaningful connections between theoretical understanding and practical skills. However, unfamiliar equipment and complex processes can create high cognitive load and anxiety, particularly when students fear damaging what they perceive as costly or delicate apparatus. In this talk, Dr Rayment will discuss strategies for supporting students’ confidence and engagement with laboratory technology, including scaffolding, pre-lab activities, and approaches to help students integrate theory and practice more effectively.

OED Webinar Series

The Outreach, Education and Diversity (OED) Webinar Series is a series of events that will run every 2 months. They will be free to attend and are designed to support our community of educators, from research and teaching focused staff, looking to improve their teaching, develop skills, and build a network of like-minded collegaues.

Running across the year, each 45-minute session will focus on themes within Outreach, Educaiton, and Diversity (OED) remit. There will be a couple of short talks (usually 15 minutes) and group discussions. Occationally the sessions will take the format of a workshop to share ideas, experiences, and practical approaches.

Sessions will be recorded (where speakers agree) and made available on the SEB website and YouTube, ensuring ongoing access for the wider community.

If you would like to suggest a topic or volunteer to speak, please contact Amanda Rasmussen ([email protected]).
