This session, led by Leighann Sherry (University of Glasgow), explores how structured learning activities can support students in developing a confident and effective professional online presence. With employers increasingly relying on online searches when evaluating candidates, platforms such as LinkedIn play a significant role in shaping early career opportunities. Yet many students remain unsure how to use these tools to their advantage. Drawing on the University of Glasgow’s LinkedIn to Get In initiative—developed within the Microbiology and Immunology programmes—this webinar will examine how closed LinkedIn groups, alumni interviews, and guided networking tasks can equip students with essential employability skills. The session will highlight evidence showing increased student confidence in online networking following the workshop, and will consider how similar activities can be embedded into the curriculum to broaden students’ awareness of career pathways and strengthen their professional identity.

OED Webinar Series

The Outreach, Education and Diversity (OED) Webinar Series is a series of events that will run every 2 months. They will be free to attend and are designed to support our community of educators, from research and teaching-focused staff, looking to improve their teaching, develop skills, and build a network of like-minded colleagues.

Running across the year, each 45-minute session will focus on themes within the Outreach, Education, and Diversity (OED) remit. There will be a couple of short talks (usually 15 minutes) and group discussions. Occasionally, the sessions will take the format of a workshop to share ideas, experiences, and practical approaches.

Sessions will be recorded (where speakers agree) and made available on the SEB website and YouTube, ensuring ongoing access for the wider community.

If you would like to suggest a topic or volunteer to speak, please contact Amanda Rasmussen ([email protected]).
