AI in Assessment, Marking and Feedback

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming higher education. While challenges established approaches to traditional teaching and assessment models, it also offers exciting opportunities to reimagine how we support student learning.

In this session, Dr Nigel Francis will open with a short talk exploring fairness and inclusivity in an AI-driven world. At the same time, exploring the shift from assessing final outputs to evaluating the learning process, and how process-based assessment provides a more transparent measure of essential competencies like information literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that may not be fully apparent in a polished final product. He argues that while AI is undeniably reshaping the landscape of higher education, it does not need to undermine the core aims of teaching and learning. By mbracing process-focused assessment and prioritising the development of essential competencies, educators can transform this challenge into a significant opportunity.

Jordon Millward a PhD Student within the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship at Imperial College London, will follow this with his own perspectives on AI as a feedback tool. Feedback is one of the key ways students engage with their learning, shaping not only their progress but also their relationship with their discipline and future attainment. In this talk, Jordon Millward will explore how AI can be used to enhance the feedback process, making it more effective, accessible, and engaging for students. He will discuss how AI can help communicate feedback in ways that students understand, encourage them to actively seek out and engage with feedback, and ultimately support improved learning outcomes.

Following these talks, the floor will open for audience discussion. Participants will have the opportunity to share experiences, ask questions, and explore practical approaches together. The session aims to create a community of educators who can collectively navigate the changing landscape of assessment and marking in the age of AI.

Running across the year, each 45-minute session will focus on themes within Outreach, Educaiton, and Diversity (OED) remit. There will be a couple of short talks (usually 15 minutes) and group discussions. Occationally the sessions will take the format of a workshop to share ideas, experiences, and practical approaches.

Sessions will be recorded (where speakers agree) and made available on the SEB website and YouTube, ensuring ongoing access for the wider community.
