Letter from the President
2023 is a very special year for the Society as it will be 100 years since our foundation in 1923!
Today the SEB has grown to be a Society with truly global reach, with members on five continents and from all career stages. To celebrate the Centenary, we have a range of events planned throughout the year, plus opportunities to apply for funding to run your own local celebratory events. The highlight will be our Centenary Conference to be held in Edinburgh, the historic capital city of Scotland where we will be celebrating the best that experimental biology has to offer and looking forward to the next 100 years!
We hope to welcome as many members as possible both at the meeting and as participants at other events, on which more news will follow soon.
Professor Jim Murray
SEB President 2021-2023

Events and Initiatives
The SEB has learned, grown and changed a lot during these 100 years; however, it has always contributed to "promoting the art and science of experimental biology in all its branches".
These are public lectures that will be live streamed from different parts of the world. You will have the chance to hear from experts about how Experimental Biology has contributed and will impact the next 100 years.
The Centenary Conference will be held in Edinburgh from 4 to 7 July 2023. The conference will use the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a framework to define its sessions.
CAREERS AND COFFEE
This webinar series is meant to broaden views of careers available in and out of academia to students, early career researchers and anyone interested in a career change. It will happen throughout 2023.
Join us to improve the visibility of biologists from historically marginalised communities and increase the influence of experimental biology on Wikipedia for an entire week in 2023.
SEB Journals Initiatives
The SEB’s five academic journals are organising a number of initiatives to commemorate the Centenary, including: Science with Impact Article Collections; Scientists with Impact Interview Series; Journal of Experimental Botany Centenary Reviews; Conservation Physiology Journal’s Ten-year Anniversary Celebration; and Reflecting on the Past, Present and Future of Experimental Biology Research.
SEB BIRTHDAY GRANT
Join our “party month” in April 2023 and plan a special celebration event at your own institute. The SEB Birthday Fund can provide up to £500 per event to assist with the independent organization of a scientific meeting, networking event, single lecture, or small events such as postgraduate research days to help celebrate the SEB centenary year.
We have launched a new peer mentoring scheme for members of the SEB to share experiences and help one another grow their careers. This will be a pilot scheme in 2023. If successful, we are hoping to roll it out further in future years.
You can get access to all the Centenary marketing material, including logos and official posters, to spread the word and display on marketing resources for funded events.
