SCIENCE WITH IMPACT - COMMUNICATING SCIENCE IN A POST-TRUTH ERA

• Dr Tom Wakeford (People’s Knowledge, Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience, Coventry University, UK)
• Kristin Schirmer (Department of Environmental Toxicology, University of Waterloo, Canada)
• Alexandre Antonelli (Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Gothenburg, Sweden)

How should we communicate the areas of research that spark debates, trigger emotions and cause family members to fall out over dinner? How can we discuss ‘big’ topics like climate change or genetically modified organisms rationally and empathetically? How should we talk about scientific methods and technologies that raise serious ethical issues if we use or refuse them? In this interactive session, our interdisciplinary panel will reflect on successful and not so successful approaches to communicating science in a new post-truth era. Our speakers will talk about their own research and experiences of engaging with different audiences. We will explore how policy, social science and the media add to the complexity of scientific debates.

With plenty of opportunity for delegates to contribute, we envisage key outcomes of the session to be the promotion of new ideas for designing an engaging discussion with students or community groups, as well as consideration of new approaches that could enhance grant application impact statements.

The pre-conference networking event is a great way to warm up for the Annual Meeting. The networking event will take place after the Science with Impact session with drinks and canapés available. It provides the perfect opportunity for delegates to create new contacts, discuss current research and share ideas in a casual and sociable setting with your colleagues.

WELCOME EVENING RECEPTION

 

DATE: 3 JULY 2017, 19:00 – 21:00

Location: Exhibition Hall, Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre
Price: Free

The Welcome Evening Reception is open to all delegates to attend and is included in the registration fee for the Annual Meeting. Network with fellow colleagues, old and new, and exhibitors in a relaxed atmosphere. Canapes will be provided during the reception. Attendance at this event is optional, although we would encourage you to attend what is sure to be a fun-filled evening.

Two dedicated poster sessions will be taking place during the Annual Meeting. Come and join us during the poster sessions to see what research on display and to share and discuss ideas with your colleagues. Two complimentary drink tickets are included in your registration and will be provided in each delegate name badge.

Åsa Nilsson Billme, Diversity and Inclusion Strategies, Lectia - Pick and Mix! The power of working in diverse and inclusive groups

Åsa Nilsson Billme is a consultant in the area of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I), focusing on strategic operational, organisational and business development through D&I. Founder and board member of the Diversity Charter Sweden, Åsa’s experience ranges from advisory and consultant services, to analysis and strategic planning, project management, training and implementation. She has produced a number of tools and materials, training and workshops, traditional as well as e-learning and is frequently engaged as a speaker and panellist on the subject. Currently, she is leading the diversity and inclusion strategic work at Nordea.
